Irvington man charged in theft

    An Irvington man faces theft and fencing charges after police were dispatched to a residence in the borough for a report of a theft of cellular phones and money in November 2018.
    Rasheed Whyte, 22, was charged on April 17 with three counts of theft and fencing. He also was found to have a criminal warrant from Livingston, Essex County.
    Police said the victim reported the he had provided one of his employees a place to reside and allowed him to stay in his Franklin Borough home. After several days, the victim reported Whyte left his residence, not before taking cellular phones valued at over $1,000 and over $500.
    Investigators discovered through various social media outlets that Whyte was advertising the cellular phones for sale.
    At 10:33 a.m. on April 17, Franklin Borough Detectives made contact with Whyte on Durand Place in Irvington and placed him in custody.
    He was lodged in the Sussex County Jail pending his appearance in Central Judicial Processing.
    The investigation is ongoing.
