Hamburg police official charged with theft

    The officer in charge of the Hamburg Police Dept. is facing theft charges after an investigation by the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office.
    County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch said George Gunderman, 41, of Hardyston was charged with two counts of third-degree theft, one count of fourth-degree theft, one count of fourth-degree tampering with eveidence and one count of fourth-degree tampering with public records.
    According to Koch, between Jan. 1, 2018, and March 2019, Gunderman allegedly committed theft by unlawfully being paid for time he allegedly worked when he was not entitled to it. Authorities said Gunderman allegedly falsified and tampered with public records to conceal the thefts.
    The borough council on Monday night suspended Gunderman without pay and Sgt. Jason Tangorra has been named officer-in-charge.
