Dec. 7A juvenile female student was charged with arson after police discovered she allegedly lit a small fire in the girls' bathroom garbage can at Wallkill Valley Regional High School.
At 9:30 a.m., the Hardyston Police responded to the school for a reported smoke condition. The smoke was found by Wallkill students who had entered into the women’s room to find a smoldering garbage can. The students immediately notified school authorities who quickly leapt into action and extinguished the small fire. The students were evacuated with a standard fire alarm. After a brief period of time the students were allowed back into the building but were kept from the second floor where the smoldering garbage can was located.
The Hardysotn Fire Department responded and assisted with clearing the small amount of smoke out of the bathroom and second floor hallway.
Due to a faint smell that was emanating from the women’s room, school authorities decided to have an early dismissal. No injuries were reported and only a plastic garbage can sustained damage.
The juvenile was being referred to Family Court in Newton.
