Mildred J. Kalafut, 94, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the Valley View RHCC in Newton.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 10, 1924, she moved to Sussex County when she married Francis Kalafut in 1953. She lived in Franklin for 57 years. Mildred was an active volunteer for the Immaculate Conception R.C. School and Church. She was president of the Rosary Society and worked in Stephens Ministry. She volunteered for Head Start program and CLAWS Animal Rescue and was an active member of Hardyston Seniors. She worked at Franklin and Sussex Hospitals as a Nurses Assistant in the 1970’s. Mrs. Kalafut was predeceased by her husband, Francis “Frank” Kalafut in 2008. She is survived by her son, Peter Kalafut of Sparta; her daughter, Lynn Layman of Hershey, Pa.,; and her three granddaughters, Julia Schiavone of State College, Pa.,, Emily Layman of Hershey, Pa., and Sydney Kalafut of Sparta. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2018 at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, 75 Church Street, Franklin. Entombment to follow at Immaculate Conception Mausoleum. Friends may pay their respects to the family on Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank Street (Route 23), Sussex. The family offers special gratitude and thankfulness for the exceptional care, love and support to the staff of Valley View and Compassionate Care Hospice.
