A former Newton man faces charges after borough police investigated a theft on July 31.
Terry Baughman, 27, was charged with one count of criminal attempt, specifically for attempting to obtain currency belonging to the victim.
The victim, a new Franklin resident, reported that a friend she knew had visited her secondary residence in East Stroudsburg, Pa., with a mutual friend sometime prior to her making the complaint. Sometime after his visit to the residence she was advised of attempted fraudulent activity at the Chase Bank in Franklin.
There was an apparent attempt to deposit a check which the victim had already deposited using a mobile device.
An investigation revealed that Terry Baughman, 27, currently with an unreported address, had taken the check from the residence in Pennsylvania, and surrendered it to a friend in Franklin, requesting to cash the check at the Chase Bank in Franklin. Mr. Baughman is alleged to have advised that individual that the check was from his family and he had no means to cash it. Mr. Baughman’s friend than made an attempt to cash the check before being told it was fraudulent, as it was already deposited using a mobile application.
Baughman was found to have outstanding warrants in Florida related to a larceny charge and an outstanding warrant from the Township of Jefferson for a failure to appear related to a traffic violation.
Following his arrest, Baughman was lodged in the Sussex County Jail in accordance with the guidelines on New Jersey's bail system.
