MYSTERY PHOTO COLLAGE
Mystery Photo Collage Abstractions by Rick Weber will have its opener from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, at Griffith Olivero Realtors, 226 Main St., Goshen. The exhibit contains 23 photo collages in an office setting. The subject matter ranges from local out doors locations to architectural images from Gothic cathedrals in Barcelona, Spain. All the photos are realistic but arranged in ways to make pleasing patterns and abstract imagery. They can be seen any time during office hours or at the opening, which is free and open to the public.
WINERY EXHIBIT
The Goshen Art League's annual Brotherhood Winery Exhibit, at 100 Brotherhood Plaza Drive in Washingtonville, will feature members' diverse artwork through July 24 The winery hours are Sunday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. A closing reception, free and open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, July 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Plein Air Paint Out
The Plein Air Paint Out from The Warwick Valley Garden Tour will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, at The Albert Wisner Public Library, 1 McFarland Drive, Warwick. Enjoy a tour of lovely gardens and the Warwick Art League artists painting them. The rain date is July 8.
SUNSET CONCERT
It’s the return of the Sunset Concert at Scheuermann Farms, 73 Little York Road, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, on a lush lawn under the stars, nestled up against the cornfields with views of the black dirt vistas. The Scheuermann family once again opens up their farm welcoming friends and neighbors to enjoy an evening of live music, dance performances and great company, presented by the Warwick Summer Arts Festival. The Warwick Dance Collective of the Warwick Center for the Performing Arts will perform in the freedom of the open air space, leading the audience on a visual journey through their contemporary performance. Guests are welcome and encouraged to get up and dance. Pack your picnic baskets a bring blankets and chairs. The suggested donation of $10 per adult at the gate will support Warwick's cultural scene and farmland.
'PEOPLE, PETS, SELF'
"Capturing The Essence: People, Pets, and Self" will be on exhibit starting Monday, July 30, at Goshen Music Hall, 223 Main St., Goshen. Goshen Art League members exhibit a variety of portraits. Viewing hours are during regular business hours or by appointment.
POETRY WORKSHOPS
Milkweed Poetry Workshop is held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday at the Milkweed Gallery, 1373 Kings Highway, Chester (across the street from the Sugar Loaf Tap House). Make poems, hear poems, share poems during this weekly workshop, open to any and all who wish to come write poems. Suggested donation is $4.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF MATERA
A new exhibit of photographs by Nick Zungoli is now underway until Sept. 30 at Exposures Gallery, 1357 Kings Highway, in Sugar Loaf. Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, having been inhabited since the 10 millennium BC. It has gained international fame for its ancient town, the “Sassi di Matera.” The Sassi originated in a prehistoric troglodyte settlement, and these dwellings are thought to be among the first-ever human settlements in what is now Italy. The Sassi are habitations dug into the calcareous rock itself, which is characteristic of the provinces of Basilicata and Apulia. Many of them are really little more than caverns, and in some parts of the Sassi a street lies on top of another group of dwellings. The ancient town grew up on one slope of the rocky ravine created by a river that is now a small stream, and this ravine is known locally as “la Gravina.” In the 1950s, the government of Italy used force to relocate most of the population of the Sassi to areas of the developing modern city. Until the late 1980s the Sassi was considered an area of poverty, since its dwellings were, and in most cases still are, uninhabitable. The present local administration, however, has become more tourism-oriented, and it has promoted the regeneration of the Sassi with the aid of the Italian government, UNESCO, and Hollywood.
