Gottheimer observes police week

HAMPTON — U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), a member of the bipartisan Firefighters Caucus and the bipartisan Law Enforcement Caucus, kicked off National Police Week on May 15 at the Hampton Diner in Newton.
There Gottheimer joined chiefs of police from across Sussex County to thank them for putting their lives on the line every day to protect New Jersey communities.
According to the 2017 Legislative Scorecard of the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), which represents more than 1,000 police units, including the New Jersey State PBA, and more than 241,000 sworn law enforcement officers across the country, Gottheimer scored a perfect 100% from NAPO during first session of the 115th Congress. Gottheimer is one of only two Democrats in the House who voted with NAPO on all priority legislative votes in 2017.
“This National Police Week, I stand up to thank and honor the first responders who risk their lives to keep our families safe. Not only do these brave officers protect us from crime, but they serve on the front lines responding to acts of terror, especially given the rise of homegrown, ISIS-inspired lone wolf terrorism,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “In Congress, I’m committed to having the backs of all of New Jersey's first responders by clawing back federal dollars to put cops on the street, making sure our police departments get the resources they need, and helping keep our families and businesses safe.”
Earlier this year, Gottheimer announced that by working together to get a better return on investment, the Fifth District clawed back from the federal government $290 per household — a 16 percent increase from recent years — through programs like the Law Enforcement Support Office (LESO) excess equipment program, FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), and DOJ’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant program.
