LAYTON — Gray clouds filled the morning sky over Layton, New Jersey on Sunday, May 6.
The weather forecast predicted rain and it looked like a cloud burst could happen at any moment. But the overcast did not deter athletes and visitors at the Peters Valley School of Craft annual Creative Rush 5K (five kilometers) and Open House & Studio Tours.
The events are fundraisers that benefit the Peters Valley School of Craft art programs.
The Peters Valley School of Craft is a not for profit 501c(3) organization established in 1970 in partnership with the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Peters Valley School of Craft enriches lives through the learning, practice, and appreciation of fine crafts according to the organization's website.
The Creative Rush 5K started at 9:30am and the runners and walkers assortment of active wear made for a colorful site along the race route tucked away in the picturesque Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
The top three 5k finishers were Stefan Albinson of Layton with a time of 22:04.91, Meghan Radimer of Layton with a time of 23:35.44 and Seneca Ashby of New York finished in third place with a time of 25:36.95.

Soon after the conclusion of the 5K the Open House & Studio Tours got underway. Fortunately it did not rain until after the tours ended at 4 p.m.
Visitors got the chance to view some amazing art. The main campus of the Peters Valley School of Craft was occupied with booths and tables filled with handmade items created by artists from far and near.
Paintings, pottery, wood carvings and handmade jewelry were on display to be seen and purchased.
Artist Susan Joy Rosetty of Kintnersville, Pennsylvania talked about her handmade jewelry at her booth commented “I started out making beaded jewelry about 32 years ago. Over time I branched out into other things. Now I do enameled copper and soldering and working with sterling silver. I make rings and pendants. I do a lot of crafts shows in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.”
Rosettys' art is sold under her name 'Susan Joy Rosetty' and can be found in the Peters Valley School of Craft gallery on Kuhn Road and on the online e-commerce website Etsy. Rosetty can also be contacted by email address beadifull@aol.com or by telephone 610-462-1893.
Fellow artist Kevin Sandt along with his wife Kathleen founded Fire and Rod Studios in Canadensis, Pa., two and a half years ago. The Sandts were busy at there table talking to passersby about their creations. Kevin likes to work with glass and metals. His specialty is marbles of different sizes and colors.
The marbles that he creates are not the garden variety sold for kids at a toy store. Kevin uses intricate designs in the hard and soft glass he molds into spheres. Kevin said “I use 24 carat gold and pure silver and numerous types of glass and colors in my marbles. Kathleen who is also a park ranger makes a variety of jewelry. Their handmade items can be found on the Fire and Rod Studios website and on Facebook.
Guests went on guided tours of the Peters Valley School of Craft Gallery, print shop and other school affiliated buildings. Green Valley Farms of Wantage, New Jersey provided fresh barbecue, ice cream and beverages.
