Hardyston Elementary School's kindergarten students on April 13 ended their marking period long study of animals and alphabet study with their 12th Annual Kindergarten Zoo. This activity has become a much anticipated staple in the kindergarten program.
Students are assigned a letter and an animal to focus on throughout the marking period. They present their animal to the class and teach their classmates information about it based on a presentation booklet students completed which requires them to learn their animal's habitat, what their animal eats, and three fun facts about their animal. Students also read non-fiction books about animals and being a zookeeper, in addition to writing non-fiction stories about their animals.
On the day of the zoo, families were invited to walk through classrooms and speak to the student 'zoo keepers' as they view the animal habitats that the students constructed at home. The kindergarten zookeepers' pride and knowledge was certainly on display as each student had practiced presenting facts on the animals.
