VERNON — In the early 1990s, with the encouragement and support of his family, Ron Williams left his letter carrier job to begin his own hardware business in the Vernon- McAfee area. In 1993, Williams opened The McAfee Hardware Store on the stretch of Rudetown Road in the township.
The family owned business has 14 full and part time employees who are experienced and trained in all aspects of hardware, construction and DIY projects, the newest employee having eight years of experience.
“I’m really lucky to have such a great staff,” stated Williams. “The best part of this business is dealing with the public and helping people with their home projects and their needs.”
According to Williams, being in business for 25 years causes generational customers.
“Kids who came in tow with their customer parents are currently today’s McAfee hardware customers, he said.
The store stocks the usual hardware necessities and basics as well as rental machines and tools, paint, lumber, general automotive and even live bait and fishing tackle. Williams and staff are always open to customer suggestions as far as adding to their stock.
“Hardware hasn’t changed in 25 years, but there are advances and different trends like the use of screws instead of nails and the development of air and battery tools,” explained Williams.
The McAfee Hardware Store is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with competitive prices and personal staff assistance. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, the store will be conducting a no purchase necessary raffle for a Memorial Day grill and $25 gift certificates to local restaurants raffled every month.
Looking back on his 25 years in the hardware business, Williams said, “It’s all good, I definitely made the right choice.”
