Wallkill Valley Regional High School’s Performing Arts Department is presenting "The Drowsy Chaperone" on March 2-4,
"The Drowsy Chaperone" is a parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s. The story revolves around a middle-aged, asocial musical theatre fan (Man in Chair); as he plays the record of his favorite musical, the (fictional) 1928 hit "The Drowsy Chaperone", the show comes to life onstage as he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors, transforming his dingy apartment into an impressive Broadway set bedecked with sparkling furniture, colorful backdrops and glitzy costumes galore.
Under the direction of Christine Molnar and Ms. Jennifer Grabowski, the students have been hard at work rehearsing their singing and acting, while simultaneously practicing their dance routines choreographed by Mrs. Denise Kulhan and orchestral numbers with Mr. Jeff Colarusso.
While the singing, acting, and dancing take center stage, much work goes on behind the scenes as well. Students enrolled in Wallkill’s woodshop and art programs have worked tirelessly on building and painting the set with their respective teachers, Mike Napovier and Amy Fairweather, while Mrs. Mary Rose Potanka and her students devised the logo, made flyers, took headshots and created the program for the musical.
Cast members have also gone out in the community to sell ads and ask for donations for putting on this year’s musical. Parents have graciously donated their time and efforts into the making of this production, from altering costumes (Mrs. Berado) to work on the set/backstage, ticket and lobby sales, and supplying the students with dinners during Tech Week. Majewski who plays "Man in Chair" commented on the work that goes into putting on the upcoming musical, “Putting on a show at Wallkill takes a tremendous amount of talent and
dedication as there are extremely high standards for our productions. The level of teamwork that goes in is unimaginable, and we are very lucky to have the remarkable cast, crew and
directors at our school.”
Other seniors who have principal roles in this year’s musical include, Chris Hara (Aldolpho), Dani Durante (Kitty), AJ Rosario (Robert), Justin Lindquist (George), and Andrew Revoredo (Superintendent).
Show dates for The Drowsy Chaperone are March 2nd and 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and March 4th at 3 p.m. Tickets for this year’s production are $15 for adults and $12 for students/seniors and can be bought now at www.ticketpeak.com/wallkill.
