Local produce bill becomes law

Legislation sponsored by Assemblymen Parker Space and Ron Dancer allowing counties to create their own label for food grown or processed locally was signed by Governor Christie.
“People are more health conscious and want to know their food is sourced locally and high in nutrients,” said Space (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris). “Farmers benefit from a local county label that tells people products are Jersey Fresh and grown at the farm down the road.”
“Special labeling establishes a recognizable local brand for farmers,” said Dancer (R-Ocean). “It assures consumers that their produce is freshly harvested and full of flavor and nutrition. The label shows the food came from across town, rather than across the continent.”
