Joseph P. Mikowski

    Joseph P. Mikowski, 87 years, of the Milton section of Jefferson Township, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017.
    He was born in Paterson, N.J., to the late Nora (nee Sullivan) and the late Paul Mikowsky.
    Joe proudly served in the US Army from 1948 to 1950 during the Korean War, as a radio generator truck driver, and trained with the 101st Airborne Infantry, also earning the Army of Occupation Medal while serving in Germany.
    He married Gloria (nee Bayles) in 1955 and resided in Milton, NJ where they raised their family.
    Joe was a tool maker at Picatinny Arsenal, before his retirement in 1988.
    He was a member for 61 years in the American Legion Tri-County Post 423. He was a member of the Firing Squad and also Chair for the cemetery committee in charge of flag replacement for deceased veterans.
    He was a life member of the Jefferson Township Fire Company No. 1 and served one year as chief in 1960. Joe was a charter member of The Milton First Aid Squad.
    Joe also served on the Jefferson Twp. Planning Board for many years. He was Jefferson Twp. Citizen of the Year in 2001.
    Joe enjoyed doing projects at home and gardening. He also enjoyed being outdoors playing golf, ice skating, fishing at the New Jersey shore with his wife, hiking, and biking. He also had many memorable friendships with neighbors and members of his community groups.
    He was predeceased by his loving son John Michael Mikowski in 2005, his dear mother Nora in 1979, his dear father Paul in 1963, his sister Madeline Huele, his brother-in-law Robert A. Huele, and his nephew Robert A. Huele, Jr.
    Joe is survived by his beloved wife Gloria, his loving daughter Sue Ellen, his cherished grandchildren Rebecca (Mikowski) Joh and her husband Hunter, and Jillian (Springs) MacDonald and her husband Darrell; his adored great grandchildren Lola Wren Joh, and Murray and Leonard MacDonald; his dear sister Noreen Richards; his nieces Kathy Richards, Dawn (Richards) Westherspoon and her husband Fitz, Terry (Huele) Pappan and her husband Christopher, and Lucille (Carroll) Huele; his nephews Michael Richards and his wife Marci, Gary Richards, Paul Huele, Peter Huele and his wife Janice, and Andrew Huele and his wife Donna; many great nieces and great nephews, as well as several Irish relations in the USA and in Ireland.
    The family will receive visitors on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, from 1-5 p.m. at the Stickle-Soltesz Funeral Home, 187 La Rue Road, Newfoundland, NJ 07435 (GPS use 1 Post Place).
    Final disposition will be private.
