SCCC gets 'technical'

Some might be surprised to learn that some of the best paying jobs are in the "technical fields." For those looking to get into a career in one of the technical fields - from building construction to cosmetology and others - where jobs are plentiful, Sussex County Community College has several options.
And, best of all, many graduates of an associates degree in the various technical programs offered at SCCC are able to gain almost immediate employment in their chosen field.
The building construction program provides students with training with always vital hands-on practice. Many aspects of the building trades require both classroom and practical training. Besides learning the skills necessary for construction and acquiring specialized technical knowledge, students will learn about planning jobs, seeking out emerging technologies and implementing sustainable practices. They will develop creative problem solving techniques all the while adhering to ethical business principals.
The automotive services program is designed to meet the growing demand for automobile technicians. Students will learn the vital skills of testing and troubleshooting as well as basic auto repair. Much of their experiences will be in hands-on learning. The school provides work-site cooperative employment with a local company to further enhance the learning experience.
“Today’s employees in the building trades and automotive repair must have extensive knowledge of all aspects of their professions and the ability to keep up with new and rapidly-changing technologies. Our program provides students with the ability to keep learning as they pursue their careers.” stated SCCC Automotive/Welding Supervisor Jason Fruge.
A third technical program is in cosmetology.
Today’s beauty industry is looking for more than well-trained technicians. Cosmeticians must be creative professionals. The SCCC program provides courses in skin and nail care, hair design and sculpting and advanced coloring. Courses are offered at the SCCC satellite location at Vernon Township High School.
Enrollment for spring classes is now open. For more information on these courses, and other courses and degree programs offered at SCCC, please visit email admisssions@sussex.edu or call 8973.300.2223. Visit sussex.edu for a full listing of course offerings.
