Vernon honors outstanding athletes

VERNON — The Vernon Township High School Athletic Dept. recently named its athletes of the week for Week 3 of the fall 2017 season.
Senior Maya Rakoczy placed first for Vernon in the Girls Cross Country Meet against Kittatinny and Hopatcong, helping bring the girls team to a 3-2 record.
According to Coach Jim Shenise, Maya is not only a valuable runner for the girl’s team but she also leads her teammates on and off the running course.
She is captain of the girl’s team and leads by example.
Senior David Sturm has played a pivotal role for the Boys Varsity Soccer Team this fall, anchoring the defense. According to Coach Joe Jones, Sturm has played every minute in all but two games this season. Sturm plays the center-back position, which is a new role for him, but he has handled the challenge extremely well.
