Senior LIfe Center plans October presentations

NEWTON — The Senior Life Center at S.C.C.C., a collaboration between the Sussex County Department of Health & Human Services, Division of Senior Services, and Sussex County Community College is hosting two (2) non-credit courses and a presentation in October.
On Fridays, Oct. 13, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., there will be a non-credit course titled “Introduction to Drawing” in the Art Gallery. This three session course will emphasize the development of drawing skills and hand-eye coordination. Basic drawing elements such as line, proportion, perspective, composition, texture, and the study of light and share are investigated through various perceptual and conceptual approaches. Open to beginning students as well as those who want to refresh their skills before moving on to more advanced studio courses.
Professor Michael Hughes will demonstrate these techniques. He is a practicing artist and member of the Fine Arts Faculty at SCCC. He holds degrees in Studio Arts, Art History, and Graphic Design. He has participated in several group shows and won awards for his work.
Students should bring basic drawing tools including a large newsprint pad and a very basic drawing kit containing charcoal pencils, graphite drawing pencils, charcoal sticks, and an eraser. These supplies can be purchased at any craft store.
The cost for the three session course is $30 payable to Senior Services Trust Fund. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. On Fridays, Oct. 20 and Nov. 3, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 3, there will be a non-credit course titled “A Musical Tour through the 20th Century” in the Performing Arts Center. This three-session course meets twice in the classroom and during the third session the class will attend a live matinee of the musical Beauty & the Beast with a theater orchestra. The musical will be performed in the Performing Arts Center at the college. The instructor, Dr. Deborah Gianuzzi, is an adjunct professor of Music at SCCC, a music teacher at Sparta High School, and Musical Director of The Theater Geeks, the theater group currently in residence at SCCC.
The cost for the three session course is $30 and includes the discounted cost of the Beauty & the Beast ticket, payable to Senior Services Trust Fund. On Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the Atrium of the Performing Arts Center at SCCC, there will be a free Guest Author Series presentation with Dr. Mark Vogel titled, “The
Mystery of Jack the Ripper.” Jack the Ripper is one of the most infamous serial murder cases in the world. The identity of Jack the Ripper is by far the most beguiling aspect of the murders. But within this mystery are countless other mysteries.
The entire story will be discussed via a PowerPoint presentation, with then and now photos, by Dr. Mark R. Vogel, a clinical psychologist who has studied the case, reviewed original police files, and visited the murder sites himself. Dr. Vogel is a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience. He previously worked in the state prison system where he performed psychological evaluations on hundreds of inmates. Currently, he works for the New Jersey VA Hospital where he treats war veterans suffering from PTSD.
His second novel, The Ripper’s Time was published in 2017. His first novel, Crestwood Lake, a horror mystery, was published in 2016. Dr. Vogel also writes a food and wine column called Food For Thought.
