With the attention of many of today’s youth on computers, iPads, the Internet and texting often family relationships suffer. Not so with the parents who have made the commitment to introduce their sons and daughters to the game of golf. They know that golf is a game that families can play together for life, and that the sport promotes honesty, respect for others, concentration and effort to master the skills needed to play well.
On Saturday, Sept. 2, nine teams made up of a parent and a child participated in the Labor Day Weekend Parent/Youth Golf Tournament at the Crystal Springs Golf Resort’s Minerals Golf Club in Vernon.
The Parent/Youth Tournament is competed in 3 Divisions: Grades K thru 4, 5th thru 8th and high school. The format of play is a two-golfer team scramble comprised of one parent and one child. The K–4 division golfers play from forward tees and shoot at larger golf holes on the greens. The fifth through eighth graders also play from a forward tee but play the regular golf course holes. The High School Division golfers play from the white tees and shoot at the regular holes on the greens as do the parents.
The Minerals Golf Club along with Crystal Springs’ Cascades Golf Club have become known to parents wishing to introduce their children to golf. The program provides accommodations such as the modified golf course with larger golf holes for the younger golfers along with golf carts designed to seat a full family of six.
The two golfer teams are paired up with a second team to form a foursome that competes together for the 9 hole tournament. During the competition golfers are exposed to some of the usual challenges of the game and the occasional great shots that become the memories of a fun family event.
At the conclusion of play Connor Gamble and his dad took the win for the K-4 Division with a score of 5 over par 36, Avery Cohen and Dad Gordon took the win for the 5th thru 8th Grade Division with a 3 over par 34 and Erin Han and her dad Brian, who also plays the bag pipe at the Ballyowen Golf Club, won the High School Division with a score of 2 over par 33.
Youth closest to the pin honors on hole #4 went to Shawn Blandine and on hold #9 to Jenna Mosier.
The parent closest to the pin winner was Tony Dasaro who hit the closest tee shots on both hole #4 and hole #9.
The winners of each division received a free twosome to the Cascades Golf Club, an UA Polo and a sleeve of Volvik golf balls. The presentation of awards was followed by a buffet dinner at the Minerals Golf Club Pavilion.
