Herman J. Smith

    Herman J. Smith of Warwick, and formerly of Oakland, N.J., passed away on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh. He was 85 years old.
    Born on Jan. 15, 1932, in Passaic, N.J., he was the son of Herman and Jennie (Saldutti) Smith.
    He was married for 53 years to the late Kathleen P. (Hone) Smith
    He served with the U.S. Air Force as Crew Chief during the Korean War.
    Before retiring, Herman was a project manager with Lam Development in Kinnelon, N.J. He was a collector of antique furnishings, art and firearms.
    Herman loved landscaping and his gardens and working with his hands. He was proud of his property and his participation in the Warwick Garden Tour.
    The family would like to thank Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties and the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence for their loving care of Herman.
    He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Ackerly of Warwick; his son, Larry Smith of Winter Park, Fla.; his daughter, Cindy Smith of Vernon, N.J.; three grandchildren: Ryan Krieger, Graham Ackerly and Erin Ackerly; a sister, Carol Dabak of California; a brother, Leroy Smith of Greenwood Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was predeceased by a sister, Bernice Mathies.
    Visitation was held Aug. 24 at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home in Warwick. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home, followed by interment in Warwick Cemetery.
