In Vernon, kids having fun while learning about God

VERNON — Seventy kindergarten through sixth graders, 10 junior helpers, two college students and 40 adult volunteers were all smiles as they experienced the five-day vacation bible camp at Vernon United Methodist Church. This year’s theme, "Maker Fun Factory, Made by God, Built for Purpose," developed the idea that we all are made for a reason and human differences are precious, not something to be shunned.
With singing, dancing, stories, crafts and hands-on activities, the message of love, belonging, family and purpose were apparent throughout the entire non-denominational program.
“If we can get forth the message to children that God loves you and is there for you and you’re never really alone, we have done our job,” beamed vacation bible school director Lisa Border, as a station of children scaled a smaller version of the Wall of Jericho, while learning the Bible selection.
Newly appointed Vernon Methodist pastor Connie Squire, one of the adult volunteers, was excited to be part of this year’s activities.
“This is my first full-time appointment in a church,” Squire said.” I love it here in Vernon. Everyone is so friendly, and we have a strong, supportive congregation.”
Lisa Border referred to Squire as a “hands-on” pastor.
Highland Lakes church member Bob Reffelt volunteered his time at vacation bible school to involve the youngsters in the church’s community garden. Most of the plants, like tomatoes, squash, peppers, okra and kale were started indoors from seed.
Maker Fun Factory activities continued all week and concluded on Friday, Aug. 18.
