WANTAGE — The High Point Strikers U19 girls travel soccer team won the 2017 Morris County Youth Soccer League Cup with a decisive 2-0 victory over the Newton United SC Pride on Saturday June 10 at Montville Community Soccer field.
After shutting out all competition leading up to this championship, the Strikers would not be denied the spoils of the league trophy. The game opened up in the blistering heat of Saturday's bright sun on the Montville turf.
Jesse Velez drew first blood in the first half with a wide angle shot to beat the Newton goalkeeper. Newton fought valiantly, but with waning minutes, High Point was awarded a penalty kick which Lauren Weiss buried deep in the left side of the net to ice the game.
The Strikers played in Flight-1 of the MCYSA league and finished second place with a 6-2-0 record.
