The Double V Rod and Gun Club (Glenwood, New Jersey) members and volunteers hosted a group of disabled military veterans on June 10 for a fun day of fishing and a barbecue at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge in Sussex.
The veterans were invited from several veterans hospitals in the region. A handicapped-accessible fishing dock with ramps was utilized.
Not all of the veterans were disabled but some had visible scars from injuries or had other ailments. Regardless of their condition they all shared a desire to take part in several hours of enjoying nature and to socialize.
Some of the food and a special patriotic cake was supplied by Shoprite of Mahwah.
The Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge was established to conserve and enhance populations of wildlife and their habitats, to protect and enhance water quality, and to provide opportunities for wildlife-dependent recreation and research.
