Andy Garger from the Sparta Education Foundation in Sparta ate one full rack of ribs in four minutes 11 seconds to win the 7th annual “Rock, Ribs & Ridges Rib Eating Challenge” on Saturday, June 10 in Sussex.
Garger defeated a field of seven non-profit organizations from across the region in the annual fundraiser held at Franklin Sussex Auto Mall.
Award-winning pitmaster Scott Reid of Texas Smoke BBQ in Jefferson donated the ribs and Franklin Sussex Auto Mall, the festival’s presenting sponsor, donated more than $2,000 in cash and prizes to the non-profit organizations and charities. Garger earned $500 for the Sparta Education Foundation and received a pair of tickets to the upcoming Rock, Ribs & Ridges music and food festival, June 24-25, at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta.
“I was just trying to eat as fast as I could knowing that $500 would be very helpful to the foundation,” said Garger.
The annual rib eating contest serves as an appetizer to the annual summer bash, which fires up the outdoor summer concert and grilling season with nine concert performances headed by Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels, Blackberry Smoke, Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, and Molly Hatchet. Attendees can enjoy mouthwatering BBQ served up by Reid and four other top pitmasters from around the country.
