Miners top Ottawa, 8-5

The Sussex County Miners (1-7) racked up a season high sixteen hits and scored a season high eight runs en route to an 8-5 victory over the Ottawa Champions (3-4) Friday night in front of 1,506 fans at Skylands Stadium.
Every Miner had at least one hit in the contest, with seven Miners collecting two hits a piece. Jay Austin (pictured), Nick Giarraputo, and Jarred Mederos each went 2 for 4, with Austin scoring twice and knocking in two key insurance runs in the eighth inning. Nate Irving also hit his first home run of the season for the Miners. Kris Regas (1-1) settled down after the second inning and threw six strong innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out six. Michael Suk and Gianni Zayas threw scoreless innings to help the Miners keep Ottawa at bay late in the game. Brian Bistagne went 4 for 5 and Daniel Bick scored two runs, while Steve Borkowski (1-1) took the loss for Ottawa.
Friday's contest was the first in a three game series at Skylands Stadium. On Saturday, May 27, the Sussex County topped Ottawa, 5-3. And on Sunday, May 28, Sussex County dominated Ottawa, 12-2.
