0GDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg Council discussed many topics on May 22.
Council President Rachel Slater said Heater's Pond will open Tuesday, June 20 and close Tuesday, September 5; swim lessons will be from June 26 through July 7. Ogdensburg residents may sign up for free lessons in person at Heater's Pond.
Slater said Solitude completed the initial Heater's Pond weed treatment and emailed a summary of their work in a monthly report.
Mayor Steve Ciasullo said he would sign permit paperwork to lower Heater's Pond during the dam rehabilitation. He saidthe pond will be lowered 3.5 feet after September 18; and the pond is 18.6 acres.
Ciasullo recommended buying a red and white lifeguard umbrella, so the lifeguards would be identifiable in case of emergency. He also encouraged completing work on the Heater's Pond building.
Councilman Anthony Nasisi agreed the building work needs to be completed, because swim team season will begin soon.
Nasisi added, he and Ciasullo should develop a plan to build boat racks.
Ciasullo agreed, saying borough employees can build four foot long frames for canoes or kayaks, which have permits.
Councilman Peter Opilla said Department of Public Works Supervisor Chris Ross will obtain one more quote for the Beardslee Hill Drive loop repair. Opilla said he wanted three quotes to compare.
Nasisi said he obtained two other quotes to paint the Firehouse Museum which were substantially higher than his first quote of $1,950. Nasisi will now move forward to completion.
John Kibildis, Nasisi continued, will ask the mine for information regarding revamping the museum sign, in line with how the mine already improved their sign.
Nasisi said, the oil tank removal should happen as soon as all forms are in order.
Ciasullo said he will contact Elizabethtown Gas to schedule their next meeting.
Officials agreed Ogdensburg Day will be Sept. 9, with a rain date Sept. 10.
Councilman George Hutnick said Ogdensburg Day will be the same as last year, only longer, from: noon to 9:00 p.m.
Nasisi reminded the council of the Ogdensburg Historical Society's “Old Fashioned Barbecue” on June 3, to be catered by Villa Capri, and including a mine tour at 4:30 p.m. He added, it will also be an opportunity to see the restored 1942 metal caboose.
Slater said the Ogdensburg and Franklin Girl Scouts will clean up the pond in place of the recently disbanded Boy Scouts.
Councilman David Astor said they should also reach out to the school's Green Team.
