Space bill preserving civil service protection passes

TRENTON — Assemblyman Parker Space’s legislation ensuring members of the New Jersey National Guard or reserves will not lose civil service eligibility while on active duty was signed by Gov. Chris Christie.
“It’s common sense. A reservist who has been called up to serve our country shouldn’t lose eligibility because of an age limit,” said Space. “This new bill essentially stops the clock from ticking, and a service member who has already passed the civil service exam and is on a waiting list for a job will not be disqualified when they turn 36.”
Police officer candidates must be 35 years old or younger on the announced closing date of the civil service exam to be eligible for the job. Under the new law, reservists on active duty will remain qualified for new employment as an officer.
