Two charged in vehicle theft

Two people face charges after Franklin Borough police received a report of an automobile theft from the Koz's Corner parking area on Rutherford Avenue.
NIcole Skellenger, 23, of Franklin was charged with burglary into an automobile and theft by unlawful taking of a means of conveyance on May 16 and Mark A. Garrera, 25, also of Franklin, was charged burglary into an automobile and theft by unlawful taking of a means of conveyance, as well of possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
Police said they searched local areas for the missing vehicle. Approximately two hours later, patrol officers observed the vehicle traveling through the vicinity of where the investigation was being conducted. Officers attempted to make contact with the occupants, who fled the area prior to police arrival. Patrol officers found the vehicle running and in disarray as if someone has unsystematically searched it, police said. The operator of the vehicle advised officers that there appeared to be personal effects in the vehicle which did not belong to him.
During the course of the investigation police said it was determined that Skellenger and Mark A. Garreraentered a vehicle in the Koz’s Corner parking lot which belonged to a patron of the establishment without permission, knowledge, and or authorization of the vehicles owner. The victim had left the key in the vehicle. Both left the establishment and drove to various locations in the victim's vehicle.
Police said Garrera was ultimately found in Paramus New Jersey and arrested without incident by Franklin setectives at approximately 8:30 p.m. on May 16. o Police said he was found to be in possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
The investigation is ongoing. Additional arrests may follow.
Police urged Franklin residents to remember to secure their residences and vehicles.
