Vernon piano teacher Cherwyn Ambuter has recently been engaged as staff accompanist at the esteemed Thurnauer School of Music in Tenafly, accompanying lessons, group classes, and recitals for violin, cello, flute, trumpet, and women’s choir.
The Thurnauer school was established 30 years ago for the purpose of providing an equivalent complete musical education for talented youth who are observant Jews and could not participate in the Juilliard and other similar pre-colleges due to instruction being offered only on Saturdays. The Thurnauer School operates throughout the week except Fridays and Saturdays. The very smallest beginners (ages 3+) begin with Suzuki method and progress through the high school years. Members of many diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds may and do participate in the school because of the quality of instruction.
Ambuter has also been selected as a classical recitalist for the Road Scholar program (formerly “Elderhostel”) in Warwick, N.Y. The Road Scholar program offers programs of 4 days’ duration of intellectual stimulus, such as lectures, local tours, classes, and entertainment for adults age 50+ who travel to a location from all over the world to pursue a particular, chosen program from among all the programs offered worldwide. A Road Scholar experience might offer a watercolor painting class, a lecture on World War I, a poetry reading, and a tour to an historic mansion. Ambuter will be performing solo and chamber recitals for the local program and has already presented a solo recital on Tuesday, May 9, at beautiful Mulder Chapel.
The Ambuter piano studio offers varied learning experiences for students, including an upcoming event for which students are already preparing: a ragtime celebration in November. As part of the 90th anniversary celebration of the MEA-NJ (Music Educators Assn. of NJ), students will be offered a private tour of the “music machines” collection at the Morris Museum, which includes player pianos featured during ragtime’s golden age. Following the tour, students of MEA-NJ members will be playing ragtime music in a recital held at The Main Stage at the museum (participation voluntary).
Ambuter has openings for new students. It is not too late to begin learning now and be ready for the ragtime celebration. Ragtime music is available in all levels.
Current students in Mrs. Ambuter’s studio range from ages 4-75 years old. Visit www.cherwynambuter.com for more information.
