Nearly 400 Girls on the Run participants along with their running buddies will join runners from Sparta and the surrounding communities for the 3.1-mile distance. It welcomes first time runners, elite runners as well as both male and female runners. The 5k is always a celebratory event that is not to be missed. The positive energy, sense of community and camaraderie found along the Lake Mohawk boardwalk throughout the morning is extraordinary. The 5K offers medals in each age bracket.
“The uplifting atmosphere of The Girls on the Run 5k is unique. Our 5K isn’t about how long it takes to cross the finish line, it’s about where it propels our girls after they cross the finish line.”, Council Director, Maureen Dykstra continued, “They are stronger, more confident and filled with a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. It is truly a remarkable experience for our girls and their families!”
Over a period of 10 weeks, girls participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. They learn to give back to others when they plan and execute a community service project. Physical activity is woven into the program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. The Girls on the Run 5k event is the day the girls get to reach their goal and celebrate.
