The Miller Brothers MMA & Fitness Little Spartans led the way at the 2017 NAGA World Championships, taking home 4 gold medals and 2 silver medals on the second day of the two-day Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament. The six-for-six showing by the members of the youth team added to a haul of 7 silver medals and 2 bronze medals the adult BJJ students won the day before.
Caitlin and Kristin Frey, of Jefferson, continued their tournament domination with both girls earning a pair of gold medals. The sisters used their background in Judo along with BJJ to take their opponents down and attain dominant positions. None of the competitors in their brackets were able to find an answer, as the two went undefeated on the day.
The Freys were joined as double medal winners by Eric Wittrien of Wantage, who left with a pair of second-place finishes.
Sorkristal Alequin and Anthony Guzman both received medals in both the Gi and No-Gi divisions, combining to win four silver medals. Jon Finocchiaro battled through a deep division to win a silver medal in men’s No-Gi with a pair of dominant victories on points.
Ray Carroll earned a pair of silver medals and a bronze medal in his first foray into competition, while Brian Roth added a bronze medal of his own competing in the men’s blue belt gi division.
The Miller Brothers MMA grappling team will return to action on June 10, as they once again head to Morristown’s Mennen Arena to compete in the Newbreed Northeast Nationals.
