Brooklyn man arrested on drug charges
FRANKLIN — A Brooklyn man faces charges after borough police reported suspicious activity at Walmart on Route 23.
Carmine J. Fenison, 20, was charged on Tuesday, March 28, with unlicensed practice o f medicine and one count of criminal attempt for attempting to attempt to obtain a controlled dangerous substance by fraud. He also was charged with possessing marijuana and a controlled dangerous substance, codeine.
The Walmart pharmacy contacted the Franklin Police Department after certain protocols were not followed by an alleged “doctor” who had contacted them via telephone to request a prescription for a patient.
An investigation by the Franklin Borough Police Detective Bureau alleges Fenison contacted Walmart posing as a physician and requesting that prescription drugs be prescribed to an unknown male.
Police said they saw Fenison leave the Walmart pharmacy in a livery vehicle from New York after allegedly being unsuccessful in obtaining narcotics from the Walmart pharmacy. Fension was eventually stopped on County Route 517 in Sparta by Sparta patrols at the request of Franklin investigators a short time later.
Police said Fenison was arrested on County Highway 517 in Sparta without incident. Police allege he was in possession a controlled dangerous substance along with marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and he was further alleged to have used prescription legend drugs without a valid prescription.
Fenison was sent the Sussex County Jail pending a hearing in Sussex County Superior Court.
The investigation is ongoing. Any local pharmacies are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency if they notice any suspicious activity regarding prescriptions.
