Wallkill Wildlife Refuge seeks participants for youth turkey hunt

, N.J. — Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge is partnering with the National Wild Turkey Federation to offer a mentored turkey hunt and workshop to youth ages 10 to 16 with little to no hunting experience.

Space is limited to two hunters selected via lottery drawing.

The workshop will be held at 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 15, at Owens Station Crossing, Sussex, N.J. It will include a meet-and-greet with mentors and a turkey hunting seminar. The day is open to all youth, regardless of whether they were selected for the hunt or not.

The hunt will take place at the refuge on New Jersey Youth Turkey Day, Saturday, April 22.

Shotguns will be provided to selected hunters if needed. Hunter must attend the workshop day to participate in the hunt. Participants will be chosen by lottery. A parent of guardian must accompany the youth at the workshop day and during the hunt.

To register, call Chelsea DiAntonio, Refuge Specialist, at 973-702-7266 ext. 18 by Friday, March 17. Participation is limited to two hunters. The lottery drawing for available spots will take place on March 20.

A $100 refundable deposit is required for selected hunters and alternates after lottery drawing and must be received by Friday, March 31. Youth must have a completed Hunter Safety Course, NJ Youth License, and Turkey Area 5 Youth Permit prior to workshop day.
