Girls on the Run NJ North held their Fall 5K on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta.
The sun was shining, the air was crisp and it was filled with energy. The DJ, hair glitter, laughter and dancing added to the spirited atmosphere. Nearly 900 runners and hundreds of spectators gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the 401 girls who participated in the Girls on the Run program this fall.
This race is the culminating event for the girls who participated in the Girls on the Run and Heart and Sole programs this fall. The 10-week Girls on the Run program provides a safe and supportive climate where girls have the opportunity to think critically, make informed decisions and become healthy and engaged individuals who positively contribute to society as a whole. Additionally, they are required to complete a community impact project.
About 160 coaches, 50 volunteers and staff work together to make this magical day possible. It was a true community wide event and the organization expressed their gratitude for the support they have received in making the race possible. Now celebrating their fifth year, Girls on the Run New Jersey North extends their heartfelt thanks to their 2016 sponsors:
Marjorie Brunnell Charitable Fund at the Presenting Sponsor Level; Riverview Paving at The Platinum Level; Wellness Pediatrics, Advocare Vernon Pediatrics, Atlantic Health/Newton Medical Center, Coldwell Banker-Julie Killen, Sparta Township Municipal Alliance, Sparwick Contracting, Dykstra Associates, Lake Mohawk Country Club at the Gold Level; Smith Sondy Asphalt, C and H Agency, Jordano Electric, Duphiney Financial Network and the Silver Level; Frank A. Macchione, Eastern Propane, The Grace Financial Group and The Junior Women’s Club of Sparta at the Bronze Level.
Girls on the Run holds sessions in both the spring and the fall. They serve girls in Bergen, Sussex, Passaic and Hudson Counties.
“Our program offers a unique opportunity for the girls to nurture their physical and emotional health because the program encompasses lessons along with running," Program Director Melissa Fagersten said. “They also chose their running buddy who runs the 5K with them. Nothing is better than seeing the look of pride on their face as they cross the finish line, together.”
Girls on the Run NJ North is currently planning their Spring 2017 season. Registration opens on Feb. 5, and the new season starts on March 6.
