Junior Olympic team succeeds at Acorn Cup

October was a big month for Giant Gymnastics, with their brand new Junior Olympic team seeing its first meet.
The team competed in the Acorn Cup at Bishop George Ahr High School in Edison on Oct 9.
The Junior Olympic Team is new to Sparta’s Giant Gymnastics this year and they premiered in a big way — taking the 4th place Team Award overall, and every member of the team placed in the top ten for their age groups.
Meagan Ward, Meghan Smith, Katerina Hlywa, Cameron Volpe, Ashley Smith, and Caroline Dietz took the top 6 spots (consecutively) for their age group, 11-and-up, while Fiona Postas, competing in the 10-year-old group, took 9th place. Their great scores and hard work also mean that, after just one meet, they are all qualified to participate in the Sectionals meet — a meet they’ll need another qualifying score at to attend the NJ State Championships in February.
“I couldn’t be prouder of these girls,” said Coach Jennifer Skorski. “It is not easy to train J.O. and yet their hard work and dedication to the sport paid off in a big way right off the bat. I can’t wait to see what they accomplish the rest of this season.”
