The Franklin Borough Council and the Sussex County Board of Elections honored three longtime poll workers from the borough at a recent meeting.
Sally McGrath, Emily Bazelewich and Joan Romaine received pins and plaques commemorating more than 45 years of service each at the polls. Sussex County Board of Elections Administrator Marge McCabe called the women “champions of democracy.”
During the presentation, the trio took a moment to look back on how voting has evolved over the years, particularly noting the changes to booths and the transition from paper to digital ballots. Bazelewich also remembered updating election progress on a chalkboard as the results came in.
“It was a long 45 years, but it was worth it,” Bazelewich said. “It wasn't really a job. It was fun.”
While Romaine and Bazelewich have called it quits, McGrath said she isn't ready to give up her spot just yet.
“To those in District 2, I'll see you in June,” McGrath said.
