Two Hamburg officers are credited with saving the life of a borough man who attempted to commit suicide in early November.
Police said Detective Jeffrey Sokolowski and Officer Devin Gormley responded to a call of a male resident, described as being a 33-year-old Hispanic, threatening to harm himself.
Upon arrival at the King Cole Road address, Gormley proceeded to check the surrounding area for the male subject who was seen earlier in the night on local streets. Sokolowski spoke with the wife of the male subject and then proceeded to the basement area of the residence where the subject was also known to stay. The entrance door to the basement was blocked by what was later determined to be a washing machine.
As he attempted to push open the door, Sokolowski heard gurgling sounds, he then forced the door open and saw the male subject hanging from the ceiling rafters by a noose around his neck. Sokolowski immediately lifted the subject upwards relieving the tension on the noose and removed the noose from his neck with his free hand. Sokolowski radioed for medical assistance and began rendering aid to the subject.
Gormley arrived and oxygen was given to the subject who, during this time, did not lose consciousness and was able to speak with the officers. Hamburg EMS and St. Clare’s Paramedics arrived and took over treatment of the subject. He was subsequently transported to Newton Medical Center for treatment.
