Rally to audit NJ Transit

    — The Skylands Tea Party and New Jersey Taxpayers' Association are holding a rally on Newton Green, Saturday, Oct. 22 in response to the recent 23 cents per gallon increase in the state’s tax on gasoline.
The groups are demanding an audit of NJ Transit, the state Transportation Trust Fund and the Port Authority, who they deem the “beneficiaries of the gas tax rise.”
The organizers issued a joint statement:
“A democracy cannot survive without accountability. Last week's gas tax rise was targeted at Sussex County families (multiple cars and long commutes) and was one of the largest in history. Yet the tax rise was done without regards to correcting the waste and inefficiency at these entities which has NJ leading the country in road costs. There is no accountability.”
On Oct. 14, Gov. Chris Christie (R) signed the bill raising the gasoline tax. It was the state's first increase in the tax on gasoline since 1988. The hike goes into effect on Nov. 1.
Christie also ended the statewide moratorium on nonessential construction projects, which was the result of the legislative deadlock over funding for the Transportation Trust Fund.
The rally on Saturday starts at 11 a.m. and runs to 2 p.m. For further information, contact the Skylands Tea Party www.skylandsteaparty.com or the New Jersey Taxpayers Association www.njtaxes.org.
