Wood carvers show off their skills

Have you ever wondered about your hidden artistic talents, whether you could create something from a block of wood or a blank canvas? At the American Woodcarving and Art School in Wayne, you can explore exactly that.
The school was founded in 1974 by sculptor Michael Denike. His dream was to have a school that’s sole purpose would be instructing and promoting the art of woodcarving. Still with the same goals in mind, developing skills and knowledge, being creative, and supporting the arts, the school has evolved. Now owned and operated by master carver Jerry Cetrulo, the school holds regular day and evening classes 52 weeks of the year. After a series of three initial guided projects learning many carving basics the regular classes allow students to work on whatever project they wish while under the direction of a professional woodcarver.
Additionally, weekend seminars and workshops are hosted throughout the year exposing students to new art forms and carving instruction by renowned artists and woodcarvers from the US, Canada, and Europe. More advanced students also have the chance to train under an artist of the highest level in his or her area of interest. On Oct. 22nd & 23rd, in honor of tradition, the North Jersey Woodcarvers Association will host The 32nd Annual Woodcarving, Art Show and Sale. There will be more than 100 carvers, painters and sculptors displaying their variety of work. Included will be the students of the American Wood Carving and Art School. Carvings, paintings, prints, photos and carving supplies will be available for sale. Juried art competitions, free demos, and door prizes every hour are a part of this event. Try out your carving skills. Bring a carved pumpkin and take a chance at winning the “Punkin Carvin Contest”. Carved or painted pumpkins are welcome.
The show will be held at the Wayne P.A.L. on PAL Drive, Wayne, NJ (off Rte.23) on Saturday, Oct.22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct.23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5.
