Ogdensburg approves $498K garbage contract

The Ogdensburg Council unanimously approved many expenditures, on Sept. 12 meeting, and discussed several other topics.
They approved: $498,000 to Global Waste Industries, Inc. for a three year contract from Sept. 1, 2016 until Aug. 31, 2019; $1,337.20 overtime to the Ogdensburg police officers working with the $5,000 state grant, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over;” $1,300 to Fredon Welding & Iron Works to install borough hall's new ramp and step railing; and $2,500 to Cherry, Weber & Associates for the Heater's Pond Dam regular 2016 inspection.
The council also unanimously introduced an ordinance amending the fee schedule for Memorial Park badges to: $5 per person and $25 per family, of five or more. Three-year-old children and under will be charged $1, with final passage on Oct. 11.
Sergeant Joseph Sanfilippo updated the council on the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over ” project, which took place from Aug. 19 through Sept. 5. This is the second grant Sanfilippo has applied for on behalf of Ogdensburg; and he said he has plans to apply for three future grants.
The grant covered $50 per hour police work, with a maximum of 100 hours, not to exceed $5,000.

Other business

Mayor Steve Ciasullo read a proclamation recognizing Sept. as childhood cancer awareness month. The proclamation specifically recognized Nicholas DaSilva in surviving his battle with cancer.
Ciasullo said President George Hutnick and Councilwoman Rachel Slater met with another business regarding possibly treating the water in Heater's Pond.
Officials spoke of the “Ogdensburg Day” success. Ciasullo said they are planning to celebrate each year, with fireworks every other year.
As new business, Ciasullo said, each year the council will ask for proposals from borough professionals. This year officials agreed to request proposals from: auditors and insurance or risk management.
Two years ago they received proposals from engineering and attorney.
Councilman Robert McGuire discussed a proposed Ogdensburg background check procedure ordinance. After Aug. 24, McGuire said, the borough interviewed about six or seven people to replace Finance Clerk Susan Ciasullo, who resigned. He added, one qualified resident started immediately, subject to a background check.
Officials agreed to develop an ordinance, in order for back ground checks to be the same for all borough employees. Borough Attorney Richard Brigliadoro will forward an appropriate application to officials.
Ciasullo congratulated Ogdensburg Police Officer David Cowdrick, the Ogdensburg Volunteer Fire Department, and First Aid Squad for effectively responding after finding the missing Franklin woman Saturday, Sept. 10. Officials hope to recognize the first responders at their next meeting.
Slater announced the fire department's “Clam Bake” will be Saturday, Sept. 24, at Heater's Pond Pavilion. When asked, she said 17 years have passed since the last pavilion “Clam Bake.”
Councilman David Astor thanked the council for support in buying the new school marquee, currently functioning in front of the school.
Finally, officials discussed the scheduling conflict of Candidates' Night with their Oct. 11 meeting. If possible, they plan to attend Candidates' Night after their meeting.
