Legion Post Hosts Fourth Annual Veterans' Picnic

    Herman Terpstra, a former American Legion State Deputy Vice Commander stands behind a very special veteran, 99-year-old World War II veteran Walter S. Atchison, a resident at Bristol Glen in Newton. A celebration of his birthday is planned for September 27.

WANTAGE — On Saturday, the Pvt. Charles Auberger American Legion Post Number 213 hosted the Fourth Annual Sussex County Veteran’s Picnic.
Attendance was excellent with not a single empty table or bench.
As in the past, dozens of picnic tables covered with a canopy were alive with conversation as the vets shared stories and then their concerns with representatives the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the New Jersey Department of Military Affairs. Dozens of informative brochures and gifts were available for those who attended. The organizations’ representatives also offered follow-up meetings and special programs for veterans.
Veterans in attendance were led by Vietnam War era veterans, followed by veterans of the Korean War and World War II. Later in the afternoon door prizes were given to many who attended. The picnic was organized by the Sussex County Division of Senior Services.
