Hundreds of area senior citizens attended Seniors’ Day at the Fair held at the New Jersey State Fair/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show.
The event included musical entertainment and the presentation of the Annual Sussex County Senior Citizen of the Year Award.
This year some ten seniors were considered for the award, which was won by Franklin resident Rachel Heath. According to Lorraine Hentz, director of the county’s Division of Senior Services, Heath’s service to the community is rare to find in an individual. Heath is always looking for ways to improve the quality of life for seniors and to provide them with opportunities they may not otherwise have. Heath ensures that seniors are treated fairly, that they are heard, and she goes above and beyond to be a voice for them.
During the holidays, Heath packs presents for the needy and helps to distributes them within the community. She is also responsible for personally organizing bus trips for seniors in order to provide them with a day out that they may normally not get. In addition, she organized and taught a computer class for the seniors of the Franklin Senior Center. She also calls bingo there on a regular basis and volunteers at the Salvation Army.
Additional senior citizens considered for the award were Betty Allen form Franklin, Erma Gormley from Sandyston, Vivian Snook Hough from Wantage, Mary Ann Mezzina from Hamburg, Arthur Murch of Sparta, Henry O. Schmidt from Hopatcong, Howard Smith from Montague, Nancy Smith from Hopatcong, and Newton resident Fred Spages.
