Two people are facing charges after police say they stole more than $1,400 worth of merchandise from the electronics section of the borough's Walmart store.
Police charged Tyler Demouth, 20, of Hopatcong, and Lea Applegate, 20, of Mine Hill with theft, a third-degree crime on July 7.
Police said Demouth was found to allegedly enter the Wal-Mart store on July 7 at approximately 2:50 p.m. and conceal over $500 worth of merchandise, specifically video games. Demouth is alleged to have left the store with the merchandise he concealed without first purchasing it. Applegate is alleged to have assisted in the theft.
The Franklin Police Detective Bureau’s investigation revealed that Applegate had allegedly transported Demouth to the store with the intention of taking merchandise from the store, which wasn’t purchased.
Police said the items were unable to be recovered even though the arrest occurred only hours after the theft.
Applegate is alleged to have taken possession of the stolen merchandise and sold it.
Applegate was arrested in Franklin at approximately 9:45 p.m. and Demouth was arrested in Franklin at approximately 11:45 p.m. also in Franklin. Both were arrested near Police Headquarters.
They were both released pending their first appearance in Sussex County Superior Court.
