Karate classes slated for August in Jefferson

    JEFFERSON — The Jefferson Township Recreation Department’s karate program will begin a five-week summer session on Monday, Aug. 1, and continue through Monday, Sept. 12. The program is open to school-age children ages kindergarten and up as well as adults. Instructors are from the Jersey Judo Karate Academy of Kenvil, and they teach the Isshinryu style of karate.
    The skills learned help students develop coordination, balance, posture and endurance. Students also gain self-confidence and discipline through progression in karate, while studying the authentic form of Asian martial arts. Jersey Judo Karate Academy is run by Sensei Rick Norris, a Kudan (ninth-degree black belt), and the Academy’s staff includes more than 50 certified, fully trained black belts.
    Classes are held in the Community Lodge at Camp Jefferson on Weldon Road at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for grades K- fourth grade and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. for grades 5 through adults. Registration is through the Jefferson Township Recreation Department or by mail, and the office is located at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road, and is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The program fee is $27.50 per person with a discount of $5 per person for additional siblings enrolled.
