High School Equivalency course planned

Sussex County Community College offers a tuition-free alternate path to achieving your high school diploma. The High School Equivalency program, formerly the GED program, provides an opportunity to individuals who have the desire to earn their HSE. Classes are located in the Learning Center on campus and enrollment is open on a continual basis throughout the year.
The curriculum is individualized focusing on the individual’s educational needs and abilities. Students work in a small group setting with the help of instructors and tutors. The subjects studied are the same as those included on the HSE Exam; math, science, social studies, language arts writing and reading. The program also aids in the transition into college.
“Each student works independently in their areas of need. Once a student is proficient in the five HSE subject areas, he/she is given the official HSE practice tests. Scores on the practice tests correlate closely with actual test scores, so they are a good indicator of test readiness. Students who are test ready are then referred to the SCCC Testing Center for HSE registration,” said ABE/HSE Program Coordinator Sara Gorst
Classes are held in the Learning Center Monday through Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to noon; Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30-4:30 p.m.; and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. Prospective students are welcome to enroll in the ABE/HSE Program once they have made an appointment to take the program enrollment test called the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education).
The number to call for an appointment is (973)300-2158.
Out of state residents may take the classes offered at SCCC, but will need to take the actual test in their state of residence.
The official HSE exam can be taken at Sussex County Community College and it is given twice a month. There is a $90 fee to take the HiSET test. For more information on the registration process contact Kathryn Mikita, the HSE Test Coordinator, at (973) 300-2186.
