FRANKLIN — Maria De Benedictus, a physical education teacher and a Sussex County resident, will offer summer program at the Littell Community Center in Franklin.
"Since it has been documented numerous times that children need to keep moving, I decided to create a summer enrichment program," De Benedictus said. " Over the summer months, students can continue to work on group interactions, communication, and problem solving skills without the use of technology."
Monday and Wednesday will be for elementary level students and will be from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday will be for middle school children and will be from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
There are three workshops within the time frame for elementary. The elementary workshops will consist of cooperative games that build on teamwork and communication to collectively achieve a goal. Retro games will consist of jump rope, double dutch, hopscotch, kickball, and tag games to name a few. These will keep kids moving while still working on basic locomotor skills. The last elementary workshop will be playing various board games, which strongly emphasizes taking turns, playing by the rules, and listening.
The middle school has four workshops between 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There workshops still contain cooperative, retro, and board games accept the activities are at a much higher level. The one additional workshop for middle school children is create-a-dance. Students will be taught a few dances, than they will be taught how to count out music, how dances are put together, and then create their own.
There is no membership fee or extra registration fee to sign up. Summer fun will start June 27 and will run until July 28. There is a minimum of 3 weeks required to sign up. The prices for elementary are 3 weeks for $135, 4 weeks $175, 5 weeks $210. The prices for middle school are 3 weeks $150, 4 weeks $190, 5 weeks $225.
The maximum number of students will be 25, so space is limited. There will be in-person registration on Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Wheatsworth Park in Hardyston.
