Wallkill Valley football coach seeks first win

    Adam Vazquez hopes to secure his first victory as the new Wallkill Valley High School head football coach when the Rangers step on to their home field to welcome Dover in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division contest on Saturday.

    Both teams enter the game with 0-1 records.

    Justin Bond scored the lone touchdown of the game for Wallkill Valley on a long interception return to the end zone in a 20-7 Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division loss to Parsippany last weeken.

    Dover lost a 35-13 Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division game against Pequannock last weekend.

    Dwayne Brown and Masyn Sanchez both scored on touchdown runs for Dover.

    High Point at Pope John, Friday

    Both programs will be in search of their first win of the season when they meet in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference American Division matchup.

    High Point was defeated, 48-18, by Mount Olive in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division opening game for both squads last weekend.

    Last Saturday, Pope John, a top-20 level team in the state, ran into a powerhouse Paramus Catholic squad and lost, 63-10, in Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division action. Pope John was defeated, 49-21, at DePaul in a another battle of two top-20 caliber teams in New Jersey two weeks ago in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division meeting.

    Last year, Pope John topped High Point, 68-13.

    Parsippany Hills at Vernon, September 19

    Vernon will look to secure its first victory of the year as the Vikings host Par Hills in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference American Division contest.

    Par Hills began its regular season last weekend with a 30-20 triumph over West Morris in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division contest. James Keyes scored on a run of nearly 40 yards and also returned a fumble to the end zone. Par Hills trailed by a point at the half, but outscored West Morris, 16-7, in the second half.

    The Vikings were shut out, 13-0, in their season opener by Mendham last Saturday in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference non-division match-up.

    Nick DeMattheis tallied an interception in the game for Vernon.
