Hamburg Mayor Paul Marino awarded the borough’s junior citizen award to Jessica Haig at the June 2 Borough Council meeting.

Jessica, who will turn 12 later this month, is a lifetime borough resident and sixth-grader at Hamburg School. In addition to keeping an A/B average, she is involved with the environmental club, safety patrol, and has been a part of the school play for the last two years.

Outside of school, Jessica is an active girl scout, plays basketball and is a cheerleader, volunteers with the Hamburg Fire Department’s Auxiliary, and has participated twice in the borough’s Junior Police Academy.

“I like to help out with fundraisers,” Jessica says, most recently volunteering her time at a bake sale to benefit OSCAR Animal Rescue. She also has jumped rope for the American Heart Association and tied pink ribbons on telephone poles to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Jessica says the award has only strengthened her commitment to her hometown.

“I’m so happy they picked me out of all the people in Hamburg,” she says, promising to be “a little bit more” active in her community because of it.
