SCCC gallery to showcase Petersen's photography

NEWTON — Sussex County Community College Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photography by Douglas Petersen.
Between the years 1985 and 1986, Petersen documented the face of New York on one particular corner, 58th Street and 5th Avenue. The scene is viewed as reflections in a fashion store window, imposing the image of the background on the mannequins in the display. The pictures, made over 30 years ago, have become an artistic document of the time in which they were made. The pictures have also been sequenced and published in the book 1985 from Deerfield Editions.
The Opening Reception for the exhibit will take place on Friday February 16. From 5-7 p.m. in the SCCC Art Gallery, Building C. The exhibit is open to the public at no charge. The exhibit will be on display from Feb. 16 through March 9.
Douglas Petersen received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1969. After a period of employment in industry, he established a commercial photography business in 1979 specializing in architectural and industrial documentation for corporate and professional clients. An intensive study of photographic science and history followed, augmented by private study with the artists Scott Hyde and Harold Feinstein.
The Last Light of Day, a book of his pictures of the Delaware River landscape was published in 1997. In 1999, he completed a two-year project photographing for the book Public Sculpture in New Jersey in collaboration with the writer Meredith Bzdak, published by Rutgers University Press. In 2003, he and the photographer Dorota Bakalus began work on a project documenting the 19th century military fortifications at Przemysl, Poland. Fortress, the book resulting from this project was published in December 2007 by Deerfield Editions.
Douglas Petersen is Adjunct Professor of Art at Sussex County Community College where he teaches courses in photography and the history of photography.
