Hamburg's Great Beginnings Preschool held its annual "Day of the Young Child" celebration on Wednesday, April 9. The celebration was held as part of the Week of the Young Child, a national children's advocacy program, according to school director Karen Rothstadt.

"We are basically celebrating children and their families," Rothstadt said. Parents and grandparents were on hand to help out and join in the fun, as well. "That is one of the things that makes this program so successful."

This year's theme was "Come learn with me Under the Sea," and each room the students visited contained a new set of ocean-related educational activities. As part of the school's motto is "academics taught through discovery," students fished, built sand castles, painted and read stories in order to learn basic skills.

Students also were treated to a performance by Marcia the Musical Moose, who brought along many friends from the sea to talk and sing about.

"Her underlying themes are environmental," Rothstadt said, "and that's what we try to do here."
