Diane Brown, head coach of the Wallkill Valley Regional High School boys tennis team, is quite proud of each member this season.

After eight matches, the Rangers’ overall record is 5-3 and they are 5-2 in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Colonial Division.

“We have improved our record from last season through hard work at practice, which enables them to have a winning record,” Brown said.

The team is scheduled to play at Boonton at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 2, then will host Pequannock at 4 p.m. Monday, May 6.

We are a team,’’ Brown said. “We all work hard at practices and give 100 percent at a match. We all have individual win/loss records, but we win as a team and lose as a team.

“At practice, we work on mistakes made during a match, learn from it, make necessary adjustments and strive to improve our skills. We always support each other during matches. Our team goal this season is to improve our record and have a home post-season match.’’

The team captains are seniors Lucio Campa and Eli McLean.

“Lucio Campa has good leadership skills and gets along well with all team members. He has been a varsity player for four years,’’ the coach said. “Eli McLean has good leadership skills and is always willing to help newer players during practice. He has three years of varsity experience.’’

A number of players are having productive seasons.

“Josiah Simmons at third singles has a record of 5-2 (through April 25),’’ Brown said. “He also made the first round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament by winning two matches in the play-in rounds.

“Tim Choi and Aiden Ehlberg have played well at first doubles and they have great communication during matches.”

The coach has seen progress this spring.

“The skill and level of play has really improved as the hard work they all do at practice definitely shows at matches,’’ she said.

The Rangers also excel in the classroom.

“Lucio Campa is FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) vice president and a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and Honors Band,’’ Brown said.

“Eli McLean is in the Advanced Choir, Jazz Choir, Fellas Choir, FBLA and Eagle Scout.

William Hasbrouck’s achievements include Advanced Choir, Jazz Choir, Fellas Choir, FBLA officer, National Honor Society and National English Society.

“Josiah Simmon’s activities are Honors Band, Marching Band, FBLA, Boy Scouts and the winner of the Staff Choice Photo Exposition.

“Aiden Ehlberg is a peer leader and in FBLA.
